About
Mary Carol Hartley 1941-1978
The Hartley House has been serving Curry, Roosevelt and Quay Counties since 1979. We are a non-profit organization funded by grants, United Way, fundraisers, and private donations.
Doctor Pat Naomi founded the Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence, Inc. in November 1978. It was first known as The Battered Women's Project. The first shelter was located in Portales, NM. In 1979, The Shelter relocated to Clovis, NM.
In 1985 a safe house was established to provide protection for victims of domestic violence and their children. After several moves, the offices relocated to our current home at 900 North Main Street in May 2003. The Hartley House also has satellite offices in Portales and Tucumcari.
The Hartley House has a Board of Directors consisting of nineteen members. In the early 1990's, Mary Carol Hartley served as a member of the board. After many years of dedicated service, she resigned her position on the board to face an even greater challenge; cancer. Sadly, Mary Carol lost her fight in October 2003. On January 7, 2004, The Shelter For Victims of Domestic Violence officially changed its name to "The Hartley House" in honor of Mary Carol.
